Root Canals

Having a toothache can be a very painful and scary experience! In olden times, the only treatment option was to pull a tooth. Luckily, we live in a time where there are treatments that allow us to save our teeth!

Why Would I Need a Root Canal?

The outer enamel layer of your tooth normally protects the nerve inside from any outside insult or injury. However, there are circumstances when the nerve gets exposed to bacteria, become inflamed, and actually die.

Deep decay (cavities), traumatic injuries, or even cracks can all necessitate a root canal. Often, the need for a root canal is preceded by extreme sensitivity or even pain. Signs that you need a root canal include, but are not limited to, throbbing, unrelenting pain, a swollen face, "gum bumps," and broken teeth.

Dr. Stewart or Dr. Buffington will know if you need a root canal based on your symptoms, radiographs, and by clinically looking at your tooth. If they determine that a root canal is necessary, you can schedule an appointment and rest easy knowing that you are in good hands. The staff at Norco Family Dental is committed to helping you be at ease from the moment you walk in until the moment you leave with a big smile.

What Should I Expect during a Root Canal?

A root canal is performed by first anesthetizing the tooth. Once numb, the doctors will access the nerve through the top of the tooth and remove it using state-of-the-art dental instruments.

We place a small filling to close the hole, and a crown is often recommended to ensure the tooth does not later break. While the term "root canal" can be scary, the procedure is most often relatively painless and almost immediately relieves the symptoms of pain that preceded the treatment.

If you have any questions about root canals and whether you might need one, don't hesitate to call us! We love answering questions!
