Practicing excellent oral hygiene is essential for maintaining healthy teeth and gums. Your dentists in Greeley, CO are here to help you keep your smile clean and cavity-free so you can enjoy a lifetime of healthy smiles. Here's what you need to know to brush your teeth like a pro.

Tip #1 Use the Best Toothbrush for Your Smile

Whether you use a manual toothbrush or an electric toothbrush, the most important thing is to ensure you're thoroughly cleaning your teeth. Whatever kind of toothbrush you use, make sure it has soft bristles and that you can comfortably maneuver the brush's head around your teeth and gums.

Tip #2 Brush Twice a Day to Keep the Cavities Away

Many people ask, "How many times a day should you brush your teeth?" You should brush your teeth twice daily, according to the American Dental Association (ADA). Acids from the foods and drinks we consume can deteriorate our enamel, and plaque accumulates over time if we don't brush it away.

Plaque buildup can then turn into tartar, which can only be removed by a dental professional during routine teeth cleanings. Also, brushing too frequently or too vigorously can wear down your enamel, so it's important to brush gently and in moderation!

Tip #3 Brush Gently

Brushing too hard or brushing with a hard-bristled toothbrush can damage your enamel and lead to gum recession. It's best to use a soft-bristled toothbrush and gently brush your teeth at a 45-degree angle in small, circular motions. Don't forget to brush the inner side of your teeth and along the gumline to clear away plaque in those hard-to-see areas.

Tip #4 Don't Rush When You Brush

You may wonder, "How long should you brush your teeth?" At Norco Family Dental, we agree with the ADA that you should brush your teeth for two minutes twice daily. This ensures you're brushing all of the surfaces of your teeth and removing as much plaque as possible.

Tip #5 Don't Brush Immediately After Meals

Brushing right after meals may seem like a great idea, but it can actually harm your enamel. The foods and drinks we consume are acidic, making our mouths acidic environments. Brushing immediately after eating can gradually wear away the enamel because the acid is still present. The ADA suggests that you wait one hour after eating to brush your teeth.

Tip #6 Replace Your Toothbrush Regularly

Using your toothbrush for too long is a common mistake. Be sure to change your toothbrush every three or four months or when the bristles start to fray. You should also replace your toothbrush after recovering from a cold or flu.

Tip #7 Store Your Toothbrush Properly

If you store your toothbrush in a drawer or cabinet, make sure it dries out first. Storing a wet toothbrush can attract bacteria and affect your oral health. Always keep your toothbrush upright and allow it to air dry before putting it away.
