You woke up with that telltale sore throat, and now your nose is runny. That inevitably means a cold is coming, and you'll deal with the uncomfortable symptoms for the next few days. Being sick is never fun, and now that we're completely entrenched in cold and flu season, knowing how to protect your oral health if you encounter a cold or flu is essential.
Here are some helpful tips on protecting your smile and dental health during cold and flu season.
#1 Don't Forget to Brush Your Teeth
While a cold or the flu may drain your energy, it's important to maintain your daily home care routine of brushing and flossing—even if you don't want to leave your bed. Consistent brushing and flossing will guard against harmful plaque and the buildup of bacteria that can make you more susceptible to developing problems like tooth decay and gum disease.
#2 Saltwater Rinses
Gargling with a warm saltwater rinse helps prevent bacteria buildup, reducing bad breath and avoiding tooth decay and gum disease. Mix one tablespoon of salt with a glass of warm water and gargle once the salt has dissolved.
#3 Stay Hydrated
Drinking plenty of liquids, especially water, will keep your body hydrated and help flush the virus out of your system. Hydration also protects against developing a dry mouth, which can promote tooth decay. Dry mouth is common when you have a cold and can't breathe well through your nose.
#4 Choose Sugar-Free Medication
Some cold medicines and cough drops contain sugar, promoting tooth decay and cavities. Look for sugar-free cough drops and medication and use them whenever possible to reduce your risk of developing dental problems.
#5 Throw Away Your Toothbrush
Dispose of your toothbrush or manual toothbrush head once you're over your illness to avoid spreading it.
