Why should I be flossing? Isn't brushing enough?
Brushing your teeth is so important to your dental hygiene! But no matter how effective brushing is, a toothbrush can’t reach all the spaces between your teeth; this is where floss comes in.
When you eat food, it gets all over, especially in between teeth. Brushing is great at getting the top, front and back of teeth. But in between…not so great. When you floss your teeth, you’re scraping away all the food and bacteria that will eventually become a cavity.
What Happens if You Don't Floss
If you forget to floss, the food will remain between your teeth. Eventually, the food turns into plaque. Plaque is still easily removed with a toothbrush and floss, but eventually, plaque will turn into tartar. Also known as calculus, tartar can only be removed by the dentist. This is why regular cleanings and exams are important.
Proper Flossing Technique
In addition, flossing is technique sensitive! When you floss, you should be moving the thread up and down both teeth that you are in between. This will keep your teeth fresh and clean, reduce cavities, and help freshen your breath!
